|Howard McMichael -|
Mr. McMichael began playing trombone in 6th grade in Galena Park ISD. He chose the trombone after hearing the middle school band come out to his elementary school for a concert. He was an All Region Band member, had numerous 1st divisions on solos & ensembles, and received a first division at the state level for his solo and his ensemble his senior year. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.
Mr. McMichael received scholarships to San Jacinto College and to the University of Houston. He chose the University of Houston because it was his hometown university, and it’s also one of the top 20 schools for an education in music in the United States. Mr. McMichael was a member of the Spirit of Houston Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Trombone Choir, Brass Quintet, and the Steel Drum Band. He was a band director for several years in Conroe ISD, but decided that he prefers performing and teaching privately.
When asked about why he enjoys teaching private lessons, Mr. McMichael stated “I like being able to work one on one with the students to help them individually reach their fullest potential. Every person is unique, and different in their own way, and I enjoy the challenge of helping those students become better musicians, and more importantly, better people. In my opinion, learning music and learning to be a musician demands a work ethic and sets an expectation of high standards that transfer into all realms of our daily lives.”
Mr. McMichael has been teaching privately for about 13 years. In addition to teaching lessons, he is an active freelance musician in and around the Houston area. He has performed with groups ranging from orchestras to brass quartets to variety/party bands. He also plays the steel drums with his own Caribbean music group that plays for a variety of occasions in the greater Houston area. Mr. McMichael recently started taking courses for his Master's Degree in Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University. He would like to teach music at the university level in the future.
